Rome has two main commercial airports—Fiumicino (FCO) and Ciampino (CIA)—and the best transfer depends on the first place you need to reach. A non-stop airport train can be efficient for a Termini-area hotel; a regional train can make sense for another rail district; and a private vehicle can solve a late-night or heavy-luggage problem.
From FCO to Termini, start by comparing the Leonardo Express against a complete taxi or car quote. For Trastevere, Ostiense or Tiburtina, research the FL1 regional rail option. From CIA, compare official bus/rail connections with a car to the exact hotel address. Times and fares are subject to change.

Fiumicino airport: Leonardo Express vs FL1
Trenitalia's Leonardo Express links Fiumicino Airport to Roma Termini non-stop in about 32 minutes and currently advertises a standard fare of €14. Its official information says normal local integrated Metrebus tickets are not valid on the service. The train is especially practical if you can walk or make a simple connection from Termini. The published travel time is station-to-station, not the time from baggage claim to your hotel room.
The FL1 regional train runs from FCO through rail hubs such as Roma Trastevere, Roma Ostiense and Roma Tiburtina. It may reduce backtracking for certain hotel areas. If your reservation is near Termini, do not confuse FL1 with the non-stop Leonardo Express. Use the actual Trenitalia timetable to compare the service, including later trains and any planned disruption.
Ciampino airport: make the full transfer legible
Ciampino has bus and connecting transport options rather than the same non-stop FCO-to-Termini train experience. Choose the option based on your hotel and arrival time, not the cheapest transfer advertised at the airport. Before booking a bus, check whether it ends at Termini or another hub, whether bags are included, how an overnight arrival is handled and whether a ticket is tied to a specific departure.
When a taxi or private vehicle is worth considering
Private transport can be the more practical decision when four people are sharing the cost, luggage is bulky, a traveler needs step-free access, or the hotel is far from a convenient rail station. Confirm the pickup location in writing. Check whether the quote is per passenger or per vehicle, and whether flight monitoring, parking, tolls, waiting time and child restraints are included. Compare the entire journey, not just travel time.
Two travelers paying the published €14 Leonardo Express fare spend €28 on the station-to-station ride. A four-traveler party would spend €56 at individual standard fare before considering any available group promotion. Choose by where you sleep
Termini or near the main rail station
Check walking distance and whether your hotel's entrance is accessible from the station at your arrival hour. If you need a taxi after the train, include that additional leg.
Trastevere or Ostiense
See whether an FL1 arrival serves your neighborhood more directly than returning from Termini; don't treat the station name as equivalent to the hotel's street address.
Historic Center, Vatican side or a remote apartment
Rail can still be useful, but plan a final metro, bus or taxi leg. For a short first-time visit, an easier transfer may justify a more central hotel if the total booking cost remains suitable.
What to do if your flight is delayed
- Before landing, save the train operator's schedule and the booking's cancellation or ticket-change rules.
- If your flight lands late, calculate baggage and terminal-exit time before selecting a rail departure.

Common questions
Is the Leonardo Express included in a Rome transit pass?
Trenitalia says ordinary integrated Metrebus tickets are not valid on the Leonardo Express. Confirm the ticket product instead of assuming all rail services are covered.
Should I book rail or a transfer first?
Choose the hotel area and arrival airport first, then compare rail and vehicle options for that address. A simple airport-to-Termini route may not be best for a hotel across town.
What if I have four people and checked bags?
Price four rail tickets plus any onward transport against a vehicle that explicitly accepts your party and bags. For groups, convenience and total price can change the result.
